The military “successfully” hit “terrorist/criminal” elements, arresting 26 people – including Awad Radwan Ghanem, whom is allegedly a leading member of the militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the military said in a statement on Thursday night.
The military vowed to continue its operations after gun attacks left five security personnel dead in Sinai on Thursday.
The military also destroyed six huts, nine new underground tunnels, and vehicles that they claim have been used in militant operations.
The statement added that it targeted the “terrorist elements” in Northern Sinai, Dahaqliya, Port Said, and Ismailia. The military stated this it was continuing its plan “in cooperation with the ministry of interior to combat terrorist activities.”
Clashes between militants and the security and military apparatuses have been a frequent occurrence following the ousting of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and have left hundreds dead.
