Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi decided to cut short his visit to the Africa Summit to return to Cairo after explosions in Sinai killed at least 20 people Thursday night, according to a presidential statement.

During his Ethiopia visit, Al-Sisi met with several of the continent’s presidents; including the Sudanese president, the Zambian president, the Rwandan president, and Zimbabwe’s president, another presidential statement said.

Meanwhile, militants in Sinai targeted the Northern Sinai security directorate in explosions that left more than 20 people dead.

Last October, militants launched an attack on Egyptian army sites and killed more than 30 army personnel.

Fighting between Sinai-based militants and the Egyptian military has been an ongoing occurrence over the past year.
