“The coup is fighting a war against Islam in Egypt and the region,” Islamist political organisation the Salafi Front said.

The group’s statement follows an alleged leak in which the Interior Minister ordered officials to surround Islamist protesters around mosques.

“ I should deal with them, dispersing, arresting and making them run away, not allowing those 100 to become thousands and be unable to face the situation…even if I have to deal with them at mosques,”  Minister Mohamed Ibrahim allegedly said in the Monday leak.

The Salafi Front had called for protests under the name “the Muslim Youth Uprising” on 28 November 2014. The group said the protests came in response to “secular attempts to weaken the Islamic identity and Shari’#a”.

Not hesitating to fire live bullets at the doors of the mosques “to prevent people from carrying the Koran… is acontempt of the sanctity of mosques, blood and the Koran”, the Salafi Front said in a Tuesday statement.

The minister purportedly said in the leaks that any revolution not supported by the military and the police, “the strongest institutions in the state”, will fail.

“Both institutions supported the 30 June protests, which led to the toppling of [former president Mohamed] Morsi,” Ibrahim allegedly said in the leaked tape.

The statement said the leaks prove to anyone who is still “deluded” that the army and police leaders betrayed the nation and the revolution since before the 30June demonstrations. It added that the demonstrations, which led to the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, were a retaliation by Egyptians against the revolutionaries for destroying the “prestige” of the interior ministry’s “thugs” during the 25January Revolution.

“The state is run by this gang since the coup,” the statement said.
