Detained 63-year-old Hassan Mubarak was granted a release by court on EGP 30,000 bail, according to his brother Emad Mubarak, manager of the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE).
This comes as Mubarak’s detention was renewed by prosecution authorities, which his lawyer appealed before court. Mubarak was arrested on 30 May and detained for 15 days, pending investigations over accusations of illegally printing and distributing books without the permission of the publications’ owners.
Four days ago, local human rights’ workers reported that Mubarak’s health had deteriorated inside the detention centre at Boulaq Police Station, adding that Boulaq Public Hospital denied him proper medical care, despite allowing him in Intensive Care due to critical health condition.
During his time in police custody, Mubarak experienced breathing difficulties because of an “overcrowded cell and a lot of smoking”, El Nadeem Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence reported on 17 June. Mubarak was transferred to the hospital twice before being returned to prison, where his condition worsened.
