The Ministry of Health’s crisis management room said that 63 minor injuries occurred during Thursday’s celebrations of the inauguration of the New Suez Canal, according to state media reports.

The injuries were treated on site, before being transferred to the hospitals, and they were all discharged after their condition was confirmed to be stable.

The Health Ministry said on Thursday that throughout the year in which the canal expansion was built, a total of 10 workers died while working on the project, according to state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram.

Thursday was announced to be a day of national celebrations across Egypt, as President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi inaugurated the expansion of the Suez Canal in the attendance of world leaders and heads of states. During his speech on Thursday, Al-Sisi announced that two other projects are set to start soon: the Suez Canal Axis Development project and the New Capital City.
