CAIRO: Egypt striker Emad Meteb will miss the FIFA Confederations Cup after suffering damage to his cruciate ligament.
The Ittihad Jeddah on-loan man will be out for between four and six months, according to Egypt doctor Ahmed Maged.
Scans on Wednesday showed the full extent of the injury, Maged told FilGoal.com.
Meteb sustained the problem during Ittihad s goalless draw with UAE side Jazeera in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday after a tackle from Brazilian defender Rosario.
He was replaced midway through the first half before being rushed to hospital.
Meteb is unlikely to play for Ittihad again as he is expected to return to Ahly in the summer when his loan deal ends.
The news will come as a blow to Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, who will have to do without his favorite frontman in the Confederations Cup that will be held in South Africa in June.
Meteb will also sit out Egypt s crunch clash against Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers on June 7.
The 25-year-old, who scored 26 goals in 51 appearances for the national team, has been an integral member of the Pharaohs squad since Shehata took over in 2004.
