JERUSALEM: Israel told any of its citizens in Egypt s Sinai peninsula on Tuesday to leave immediately, saying there was a firm threat of attacks during the Jewish Passover holiday between April 8 and 16.

There is a serious, immediate and concrete threat of Israelis being kidnapped and then taken to the Gaza Strip, said a statement from the anti-terror office, which reports directly to the prime minister s office.

It warned that Lebanon s Hezbollah movement could attack Israelis in the Sinai or single them out for abduction.

Israelis regularly flock to Egypt s Red Sea resorts despite a wave of attacks on tourists between 2004 and 2006 that killed more than 100 people.

Last month the anti-terror office urged Israelis not to go to Egypt or Arab states such as Morocco and Tunisia, in the wake of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza in December and January that killed more than 1,300 Palestinians. -AFP
