CAIRO: The spokesman for an international peacekeeping mission in Egypt says a Colombian soldier died of a gunshot wound sustained when another Colombian peacekeeper fired from his weapon.

Normand St. Pierre says the shooting occurred Thursday at the Colombian contingent s camp of El-Gora, in the Sinai Peninsula.

St. Pierre says the wounded soldier was evacuated to an Israeli hospital in Tel Aviv, where he later died.

He says a second Colombian soldier was also wounded in the incident, but is recovering in an Egyptian hospital. The incident is under investigation.

The Colombians are part of the Multinational Forces and Observation – an independent force created by Egypt and Israel to monitor their border in the Sinai after a 1979 peace deal. -AP
