CAIRO: The Delegation of the European Commission in Egypt together with the Ministry of Civil Aviation inaugurated a workshop today on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications.

The two-day workshop will take place at the National Air Navigation Services Company.

Keynote speakers include Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Aboul Naga, Civil Aviation Minister Ahmed Shafiq, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission Klaus Ebermann and Counsellor to the Chairman of the National Air Navigation Services Company Maged El Masry.

Participants in this workshop will include representatives from the Ministries of Civil Aviation, Transport, Maritime, Electricity and Energy, Petroleum, Agriculture, in addition to universities, research and scientific institutions and potential partners from the private sector.

This workshop will serve as an introduction to the European initiatives on Global Navigation Satellite Systems which encompasses Galileo and EGNOS: the satellite navigation applications that are being developed covering numerous sectors of the world economy, according to a press statement.

All sectors of modern economies are affected by the development of satellite navigation technologies said Ebermann. Satellite navigation is becoming more and more part of the daily life of individuals, not only in their cars or in their mobile telephones but also in energy distribution networks or banking systems.

A Euro-Med Cooperation Office representing Galileo in Egypt was inaugurated in 2004 with the aim of promoting the use of the GNSS technology in MEDA countries, implementing awareness activities to facilitate interaction between GNSS actors and ensuring flow and exchange of information within the MEDA region.
