CAIRO: The median overnight interbank rate on the Egyptian pound was steady at 11.9 percent on Thursday compared to 11.907 percent on Wednesday, dealers said.

The central bank was scheduled to auction 273-day and 364-day treasury bills on Thursday, which traders said was keeping interbank rates high.

We have been seeing some central bank interventions in the deposit auctions and it is aggressively making more than one issue, one banker said.

Five out of 10 banks contacted by Reuters reported overnight interbank deals at rates between 11.6 percent and 12 percent, compared to between 11.8 percent and 11.9 percent on Wednesday.

Two banks said they dealt one-week money, at rates between 11.95 and 12.25 percent.

The Egyptian pound had depreciated to LE 5.5909 per dollar by 1100 GMT, from Wednesday s closing weighted average of 5.5708. -Reuters
