In the May 24 edition of the newspaper, story entitled “Mubarak lashes out at press over coverage of protests, The Associated Press erroneously attributed critical comments in a newspaper editorial to President Hosni Mubarak.

The editorial in the Al-Gomhuria newspaper, not Mubarak, criticized news coverage of police actions during the protests as libel and blasphemy punishable by law and described the rallies as evidence of democracy in Egypt.

The editorial, not Mubarak, contended that the president could have prohibited the Muslim Brotherhood from taking seats in Parliament if he had wished.

In a separate interview in the same edition of Al-Gomhuria, Mubarak said that the success of the World Economic Forum, held over the weekend in Sharm El-Sheikh, was evidence that Egypt is on the right path and that the international community supports Egypt s economic reforms. AP
