CAIRO: Egypt has resumed its diplomatic relations with El Salvador after the Central American country s decision last month to move its embassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
The statement said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit and his Salvadoran counterpart Francisco Lainez announced the resumption of diplomatic relations after a meeting in New York. Both ministers are attending the UN General Assembly meetings.
Abul-Gheit, while attending the Nonaligned Movement summit in Havana last week, announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with Costa Rica, which also said last month it was moving its embassy to Tel Aviv because of Jerusalem s disputed status.Egypt severed its diplomatic relations with Costa Rica in 1983 months after it moved its embassy to Jerusalem.
Relations with El Salvador were cut in 1984.
Egypt and Jordan are the only Arab nations that have signed peace treaties with Israel.
