The executive board of the UNESCO will start on Thursday voting for the di- rector-general post on Wednesday, with only three candidates, inculding Egypt’s candidate Moushira Khattab after scor- ing 13 votes against 18 votes for both the Qatari and French candidates.
Egypt’s candidate Moushira Khattab, received 12 votes during the second round, remaining in the third place, and Qatar’s candidate, Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari received 20 votes, while the French candidate received 13, similar to the result of the first round.
Khattab and Kawari both earned one extra vote during this round.
As For the results of first round, Khat- tab received 11 votes ranking in the third place, while the Qatar’s Candidate Ab- dul Aziz Al-Kawari, received 19 votes, coming in the first place, as the French candidate who was viewed as a strong contender for both earned 13 votes.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry has been engaged in consulta- tions with the foreign ministers of a number of UNESCO Executive Board members to ensure the necessary sup-
port for the Egyptian candidate, minis- try’s spokesperson said in statement on Tuesday.
The Egyptian delegation present in in Paris will continue contacts, particularly with the African member states of the board to support the Egyptian candidate, he also added.
The candidates are scheduled to face further rounds until Friday, in order any candidate could receive majority of 30 out of 58 members of the UNESCO’s executive broad, and be approved by the UNSECO’s members in a general assembly in November. Two candidates will be selected for final voting in the gen- eral assembly from those who received the highest votes throughout the voting process.
If none of the candidates were able to receive 30 votes throughout the four rounds, a fifth round will take place, but it is not required to get 30 votes this time.
The new Director-General is sched- uled to take office on 15 November, after the resignation of the current Bulgarian Director-General Irina Bovoka, who was elected for two consecutive terms.
