Egypt’s Cabinet approved agreement between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Egyptian government to upgrade line 1 of Cairo’s underground Metro Station, during a weekly meeting on Wednesday.
The agreement that was signed in August, will provide a value of €205m that aims at upgrading energy units, signals, and central control systems.
Minister of Transport Hisham Arafat said that line 1 of the metro is used by up to 1.8 million commuters daily, according to state-run Al-Ahram.
Egypt has recently hiked the price of metro tickets, which will also help in financing the development of the metro system. Currently, innovation projects are being applied on 3, 4 lines of the metro.
