Government meets World Bank to discuss cooperation in Egypt’s new health insurance

The government wants the World Bank to expand financing to develop projects in Upper Egypt

Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Minister of Finance Mohamed Moeit received a World Bank mission on Thursday at the headquarters of the ministry of finance.

The mission included Amr El-Shalakani, senior health specialist at the World Bank, and Regional Director of the World Bank office in Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti Marina Weiss.

During the meeting, they discussed possible ways of cooperation between the government and the World Bank in developing the country’s comprehensive health insurance system. The delegation reviewed the bank’s international experience with developing comprehensive health insurance systems in India, Croatia, and Thailand.

The visitors presented some proposals that could contribute to improving the performance of health insurance in Egypt.

Moeit said the government was keen on enhancing cooperation with the World Bank and other international institutions in various development fields, especially health and education, being the main pillars of improving living conditions of the people.

He reviewed the steps of applying the new health insurance system, which started in Port Said governorate in July 2019. The comprehensive health insurance shall cover all governorates by 2032.
