Egypt celebrates National Environment Day on 27 January

Egypt’s Ministry of Environment has launched, in cooperation with the Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE), the activities marking the country’s National Environment Day.

On 27 January every year, Egypt celebrates the National Environment Day which commemorates the day on which the first legislation, Law No 4 of 1994, to protect the environment was issued in the country.

Egypt marked the occasion for the first time in January 2020, under the slogan ‘Transformation to Green – A Way to Sustainability’. The slogan was part of the ‘Go civilised, go green’ initiative to spread environmental awareness.

The Ministry of Environment said that it was keen to hold a national environment day that is celebrated every year. It aims to raise environmental awareness among citizens, and encourage them to practice environmentally friendly behaviours aimed at preserving natural resources.

The 2021 celebration comes under the theme ‘Green Recovery – A way to post-COVID-19’, and comes in light of a notable increase in the state’s interest in environmental matters. The ministry is also working to integrate environmental concepts into educational curricula through a protocol of collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said that the environment is an imperative aspect of the sustainable development strategy under Egypt’s Vision 2030.
