The Arab League has expressed its deep concern over the escalation of violence in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, amid continuing disputes over issues related to holding general elections in the country.
A statement issued by the Arab League’s General Secretariat said, “The Arab League is closely following these developments and calls on all parties in Somalia to engage immediately in a comprehensive dialogue to reach an inclusive agreement on the means to hold elections, and to commit themselves to a complete renunciation of the use or threat of violence.”
The statement also noted that the regional organisation is committed to supporting all efforts aimed at finding a Somali consensus solution to this situation. It said that this will take place in a way that strengthens the country’s security and stability, and meets the aspirations of Somali people.
