Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York, Mohamed Idris, has participated in the UN commemoration of the International Day Against Human Trafficking.
The event was organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in cooperation with the Group of Friends United Against Human Trafficking, a group that Egypt co-founded.
It brought together Member State representatives, UN agencies concerned with combating human trafficking, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) specialised in providing assistance to its victims.
A major part of the event was devoted to listening to the testimonies of human trafficking victims, their contributions to spreading awareness about this crime, and how to combat it.
Idris reviewed the Egyptian Government’s various efforts in international and regional cooperation to combat human trafficking crimes.
The ambassador also touched on the cooperation frameworks with relevant United Nations organisations, led by UNODC.
He addressed the intensive efforts made by the National Coordinating Committee for Preventing and Combating Illegal migration and human trafficking (NCCPIMTIP).
Idris highlighted the achievements under the circumstances imposed by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
This includes Egypt’s keenness to complete the establishment of an integrated protection system aimed at providing assistance and shelter services to the victims of that crime.
