The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has formed a high-level committee to study an offer from the American clean energy giant Tesla to provide battery systems for renewable energy storage with a capacity of 20 MW, an official source told Daily News Egypt.
Ahmed Mahina, the First Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy for Research, Planning, and International Cooperation, explained that the battery storage technology offered by Tesla has a lifespan of 20 years, which is approximately the same as a solar power plant.
However, he noted that the cost of electricity storage is twice of its production.
Mahina added that a committee was formed to study the localisation of electric battery manufacturing in Egypt with the participation of the Ministries of International Cooperation; Trade and Industry; Finance; Planning; and Military Production. The committee is scheduled to meet before the end of the first half of this year.
He explained that the committee seeks to establish Egyptian factories to produce electric car batteries, especially with the state’s efforts to expand the deployment and use of electric cars.
The undersecretary added that the committee has not met yet, and its first meeting is scheduled to be held before the end of June, and that there are a number of Egyptian factories ready to manufacture parts of electric car battery components.
He also said that there are a number of international offers received by the government to manufacture electric car batteries, but the decision will be decided according to what the Technology Localisation Committee approves after its meeting.
