Health Ministry reviews Endemic, Liver and Infectious Diseases Institute’s efforts in 2023

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has announced that 169,025 citizens received medical services through the National Research Institute for Endemic, Liver and Infectious Diseases, affiliated with the General Authority of Hospitals and Teaching Institutes, during the period from 1 January to 31 March 2023.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, indicated that the medical services provided by the institute included outpatient services in several specialities including; internal, liver and digestive system, tumours, early detection of tumours, children, skin, and liver transplantation. 101, 503 citizens have received services through medical clinics.

He added that 9 liver transplant operations were performed, with a success rate of 80%, matching global rates ranging from 75 to 80%, and 558 surgeries were performed, in addition to the treatment services provided by the Hepatitis Unit to 1,500 citizens, according to the latest treatment protocols, in addition to the periodic medical follow-up and treatment services provided by the institute.

Abdel Ghaffar noted that the number of beneficiaries of radiology services amounted to 5,424 cases, including (diagnostic, ultrasound, CT, and resonance imaging), in addition to conducting 60,014 laboratory analyses.

Moreover, Mohamed Mustafa, the head of the General Authority for Hospitals and Educational Institutes, said that the institute is keen to provide the best medical service by following international therapeutic methods in the specialities of; general surgery, liver and pancreatic surgery, digestive diseases, clinical pharmacy, dermatology, paediatrics, intensive care, Clinical Pathology, Histopathology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Applied Epidemiology, Specialized Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Kidney Diseases, General Internal Medicine, Anesthesia.

Bassem Issa, the Director of the National Research Institute for Endemic, Liver and Infectious Diseases, indicated that the internal department of the institute operates with a capacity of 108 beds, including (internal, intensive and intermediate care) beds. Issa added that the institute participates in the initiative of the president of the republic to finalise waiting lists.
