Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the outcomes of the meeting of the Arab ministerial contact committee on Syria with UN special envoy Geir Pedersen on Sunday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
Shoukry stressed the keenness of the committee to complete its task in order to reach a settlement to the Syrian crisis in all its dimensions and preserve the unity and stability of Syria, the ministry said in a statement.
He also exchanged views with Pedersen on the latest developments on the situation in Syria at various levels and the efforts being made to address all aspects of the Syrian crisis. They also agreed to arrange a bilateral meeting between them on the sidelines of the meetings of the UN General Assembly next September.
Pedersen expressed his great appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to settle the crisis in Syria, praising the outcomes of the meeting of the Arab Contact Committee and confirming his intention to coordinate with the various parties concerned in order to build on what was achieved at the last meeting of the Committee.
The Arab ministerial contact committee on Syria is a group of Arab countries that have been working to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis. The committee met in Cairo on Aug. 15 and discussed ways to resume the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria.
The Syrian crisis began in 2011 when the Assad government cracked down on peaceful protests. The conflict has since evolved into a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions more.
