Egypt condemned, on Tuesday, the missile attacks that targeted the northern Iraqi city of Erbil on Monday evening, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of a number of people.
Expressing its sincere condolences to the government and people of Iraq and the families of the victims, Egypt also wished for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Egypt affirmed its support for Iraq and the measures it takes to protect its security and maintain stability. It also expressed its confidence in Iraq’s ability to decisively respond to terrorist practices, which will not deter it from its tireless efforts to establish nationwide security in a way that preserves its stability and preserves its national capabilities.
Erbil, which serves as the capital of Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region, was subject to a missile attack on Monday evening, targeting the area around the city’s airport. International coalition forces who are fighting against the terrorist organisation known as ISIS are stationed in the area.
An American civilian contractor was killed in the attack, with six US citizens, including a soldier, left wounded. The Pentagon said that 14 missiles targeted a US base in the city, four of which hit buildings there.
A pro-Iranian militia calling itself Awliya Al-Dam (“Saints of Blood”) claimed responsibility for the attack on the US base, and said that it had targeted the US occupation in Iraq. It did not provide any evidence of its claim.
Awliya Al-Dam said that its members approached the Harir military base, located 7km from Erbil, and managed to direct 24 missiles that hit their targets accurately. The missiles caused severe damage to US vehicles, stores and aircraft, and many casualties among the personnel at the base.
