Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar discussed plans with Samsung Electronics to explore the local production of medical imaging equipment, alongside upgrades to healthcare facilities and digital training infrastructure, during a visit to South Korea.

The Ministry of Health said the discussions included a proposal to establish a factory in Egypt to manufacture ultrasound devices in cooperation with Al-Radwan, Samsung’s local agent, as well as a separate study on the potential local production of digital mobile X-ray units.

The meeting followed Abdel Ghaffar’s visit to a new Samsung ultrasound factory scheduled to open next week, where he reviewed production lines and the use of artificial intelligence and robotics in manufacturing.

The two sides also agreed to explore the establishment of a Samsung training academy, with the Princess Fatma Academy for Professional Medical Education proposed as a potential location.

They reviewed progress on a project to upgrade 715 family health centres and units across Egypt, including the technical specifications of medical and digital equipment required for the facilities.

The discussions also covered plans to develop five smart training centres equipped with interactive screens, tablets and other digital tools, alongside technical training for ministry engineers and technicians in equipment operation, digital systems, maintenance and technical support.

Officials also reviewed the delivery of 150 Samsung ultrasound devices, including their operational status, warranty and maintenance arrangements, and staff training requirements.

The ministry said the discussions further addressed opportunities to expand the use of Samsung’s digital solutions in hospitals and health centres, including digital displays, video communication systems and specialised artificial intelligence applications. The talks also covered healthcare facilities being upgraded under the Decent Life initiative.

The statement did not disclose the expected investment value of the proposed local manufacturing projects or provide a timetable for a final decision on whether they would proceed.
