CAIRO: Alaa and Gamal Mubarak were questioned in Tora Prison on Sunday after the interior ministry deemed it unsafe for them to be transferred to the Prosecutor General’s office in downtown Cairo.

The prosecution office said in a statement that Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud had sent a request to Minister of Interior Mansour El-Essawy to take the necessary security procedures to transfer ousted president Hosni Mubarak’s sons to the Prosecution’s headquarters, however El-Essawy refused citing security concerns.

The sons were interrogated in detail regarding charges that include squandering public funds and illegal gains.

The accusations mentioned in the statement include forcing agents of foreign companies to give them shares as the mandatory Egyptian partner and their involvement in the privatization of public sector companies.

They were also questioned about their connection to a company in Cyprus and one of the British Isles managing investment funds, financed by businessmen.

The two brothers were remanded in custody for 15 days last Wednesday pending investigations.
