The delivery of aid promised to the Luxor tourism sector will be postponed until after the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, according to Tharwat Al-Agemi, the president of the Chamber of Travel and Tourism.
The aid from the Egyptian Tourism Federation, which will range from EGP 1m to EGP 2m, will be given to those most affected by the deteriorations of the sector.
Al-Agemi added that young labour, and not the bazaar owners, would receive financial support.
“300 pounds will be distributed in envelopes for those who suffered losses and damages,” he said.
“The bases for the selection of who deserves the aid have not yet been determined,” Al-Agemi said, adding that the Ministry of Tourism had made “no monetary contributions but it will supervise the distribution process.”
The Ministry of Tourism has not issued any comment on the initiative.
Bakry Abdel Geleel, the head of the Bazaar Owners’ Association in Luxor said they have been suffering greatly since 2011 and bazaar owners had not been making any profits.
The financial support was originally scheduled to be distributed on the 27th of Ramadan, 5August. The new distribution date has yet to be announced.
