The Egyptian National Men’s Volleyball team clinched its seventh African Championship title on Friday, in the championship’s 19th edition held in Sousse, Tunisia.
The championship was held in a single Round-Robin format, where each team plays its five other counterparts.
Egypt secured 14 points by winning all of its five games, defeating Cameroon 3-0, Tunisia 3-1, Libya 3-1, Algeria 3-2 and Morocco 3-1. The Tunisian team came in second place, four points away from the Egyptian team, and Morocco secured third place with seven points.
The Egyptian team, coached by Sherif El-Shemerly, claimed a large share of the championship’s awards.
Abdel Latif Othman picked up the championship’s MVP award, while Ahmed Abdel Hay was the championship’s best server and Abdallah Abdel Salam secured the best setter award.
Egypt has won this championship seven times, the first being in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, in 1976. The second title was secured on home soil in Port Said, 1983.
Egypt has won the championship in its last five incarnations: 2005 in Cairo, 2007 in Durban, South Africa, 2009 in Tetouan, Morocco, 2011 in Tangier, Morocco, and this year’s victory in Tunisia.
