Thousands of Ultras, a group of energetic supporters of the Al-Ahly Football Club, marched from the team’s Zamalek stadium to the High Court in Downtown on Wednesday afternoon in protest of the detention of dozens of their members.

The demonstrators marched from Zamalek to Ramses Street, the location of the High Court, over the eastbound lane of the 6 October Bridge, effectively crippling midday traffic in the heart of Cairo. The Ultras chanted slogans demanding their members’ release and carried signs with pictures of those detained.

120 Ultras were detained by security forces on 13 October when they went to welcome home the national handball team at the airport.  They were stopped by police on suspicion of causing mischief.  25 remain in detention on various charges of attempted murder, bullying, possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosives, resisting arrest, and destruction of public property.
