Minister of Supply Khaled Hanafy announced that the government will receive 80,000 tonnes of Indian rice next week.

In a press statement, the minister said that the General Authority For Supply Commodities (GASC) contracted to import this amount to be offered in all of the ministry‘s outlets.

Hanafy added that next month, with the beginning of the rice harvest, the ministry is expected to purchase more than 1m tonnes of rice from farmers directly, after increasing storage capacities to build 17 new silos and transform 105 dust barns into a space that will have a storage capacity of 2.5m tonnes.

Hanafy demanded that the heads of rice mill companies develop and modernise the mills to increase the operational capacity to work in the coming period at maximum capacity.

Hanafy added that the ministry is currently producing large quantities of domestic rice at a price of EGP 4.5 per kilo.
