CAIRO: SK Lierse Egyptian winger Mohamed Abdel-Wahed insisted that he won t give up fasting during Ramadan in order to keep his place within the club s first team.
The Egyptian duo of Abdel-Wahed and Ahmed Samir both missed Lierse s 4-1 defeat to RFC Liege in the Belgian second division, after rejecting their coach s request not to fast on match days.
The coach asked me not to fast in order to play against Liege, but that was unacceptable for both me and Samir. That s why we were left out of the squad, Abdel-Wahed told FilGoal.com on Monday.
I told the coach that despite being professionals, religious commitments are more important for us than football.
The former Zamalek man added that playing while fasting never affected his performances as he did that successfully on many occasions while playing for Tersana.
Former Petrol Assiut keeper Ahmed Hamdy recently rejected a move to Greek side Veria after he was asked not to fast during Ramadan as well.
