Al-Sisi asserts Egypt’s strong will to find final results in Regeni’s case

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi asserted Egypt’s strong will to reach final results in investigation into the murder of the Italian student Guilio Regeni, during his meeting with the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Wednesday.

He also pointed out that Egypt will take the perpetrators to justice and its keenness to continue cooperating with the concerned bodies, judicial authorities, and Italian counterparts in this regard.

On the other hand, Salvini praised the cooperation with the Egyptian authorities to reach the truth and find the perpetrators.

Al-Sisi has previously affirmed on several occasions Egypt’s keenness to reveal the mystery of the case of the Italian researcher with all transparency, and in cooperation between the Egyptian and Italian authorities.

Both countries have been coordinating long in investigating the case, whereby the latest updates were in June, when the Egyptian general prosecutor’s office said in a joint statement with its Italian counterpart that the examination of the recordings of the Cairo Metro stations, as part of the investigation into the murder of the Italian student Regini, showed “several gaps” in the content, which are missing images and videos that are not retrieved.

Regeni, 28, was found dead in a ditch along the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road on 3 February, nine days after his disappearance.

A meeting was held in the presence of Minister of Interior Mahmoud Tawfik, Head of the General Intelligence Abbas Kamel, and Italian Ambassador in Cairo Giampaolo Cantini.

Moreover, during the meeting, officials discussed means of enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries, and exchanged views on a number of international and regional issues of common concern, especially the latest developments in the Libyan file and illegal migration across the Mediterranean, according to presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady. 

Al-Sisi stressed on the importance of enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Italy at various levels and achieving the strategic partnership between the two friendly countries.

Salvini praised the relations between the two countries, referring to the existing cooperation between the two sides at various levels, especially in the field of economic relations, the fight against terrorism, and illegal immigration.

He further pointed out that Italy is organising an international conference on combating terrorism.
