Egypt’s Industrial Development Bank (IDB) made a net profit of EGP 1bn in 2025, the first time it has reached that mark, and will reward shareholders with bonus shares for the first time in two decades.

The lender’s ordinary general assembly approved the accounts for the year to 31 December. Management attributed the results to a restructuring plan launched in mid-2024 to strengthen the bank’s position in the sector and its role in financing industry.

Hussein Refaie, chief executive and managing director, said the bank had moved from confronting structural problems to delivering strong, sustainable growth, helped by a clear strategy that had sped up the pace of business.

Total assets rose 31% to EGP 64.9bn by the end of 2025. Customer deposits grew faster, up 44% to EGP52.1bn, while the loan book expanded 34% to EGP 34.6bn.

Operating income climbed 33% to EGP 3.6bn. Profit before tax and provisions rose 47% to EGP 2.5bn, a sign that income grew faster than costs over the year.

The sharper change came in asset quality. Non-performing loans fell to 8.1% of total lending at the end of 2025, from 13.9% a year earlier. Provision coverage rose to 126% of bad loans, from 97%, meaning the bank now holds more in reserves than the value of the loans it has classified as non-performing.

The ratio remains in the high single digits, but the shift over 12 months is large for a lender whose mandate centres on industrial credit.

Akram Tinawi, the bank’s non-executive chairman, said IDB would keep financing strategic projects across industry, energy, urban development and clean power, as part of an effort to diversify its income.

The bank has also approved a plan to open new branches and refurbish existing ones, alongside efforts to widen its customer base and update its products.

It spent about EGP 500mn on technology in 2025, the first year of a five-year programme with a target of EGP 3bn in total investment. The money is going into core banking systems, digital channels, cyber security, process automation and mobile banking.

Refaie called 2025 a milestone for the bank. He said the first billion-pound profit and the return of bonus shares were the product of restructuring and efficiency gains, and that IDB would press on with building an integrated banking model that balances profitability, sustainability and growth as a full-service commercial lender.
