The US Embassy in Cairo confirmed Sunday the reported death of an American woman in the city of Mahalla in the northern Egyptian governorate of Gharbeya.

“We have been informed by the police that she has been found dead. The deceased has been identified as Elizabeth Walker and was found dead in unknown circumstances,” the embassy’s Press Attaché Mofeed Deak told Daily News Egypt over the phone.

Walker’s body was reportedly delivered to the Mahalla Public Hospital, as early investigations revealed she was visiting her husband who works in the area, according to state-run media on Saturday. A final Forensic Medicine Authority death report has yet to be released.

MENA described the death as a “mysterious incident”. The embassy declined to comment further until investigations are completed.
