CAIRO: A man has died after being wounded by police during clashes in the industrial city of Mahalla on April 6, bringing to three the death toll from two days of demonstrations against price rises.

Reda Essayed Metwalli, 38, had been in a coma since he was hit in the head by a police bullet as he walked home after work in the Nile Delta city, a focal point for workers’ protests, a security official told AFP on Wednesday.

Metwalli died on Tuesday and his funeral was held the same day amid a heavy police presence, the independent Al-Masry Al-Youm daily reported.

Two other people, including a 15-year-old boy, were killed in the Mahalla protests which saw police fire rubber-coated bullets and tear gas at workers and residents complaining about price hikes and low salaries. -AFP
