This year, Ramadan’s last Friday was the 27th day of the holy month, what is known as Leylet al-Qadr (the night of power).

In Islam, Laylet al-Qadr is the night the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. According to the Quran, that night is the greatest night of the year and any adoration practised on that night is better than doing so continuously for 1,000 months.

Thousands of Muslims flocked to mosques last Friday to pray Tarawih, a prayer only prayed during Ramdan after Isha’ prayer and Qeyam al–Leil. For them, this is the holiest night of the whole month, on which God’s mercy is abundant and all prayers are accepted.

Cairo’s largest mosques were full of people from iftar time until dawn. They were all asking God to forgive their sins and accept them within his mercy.

Even though the exact day of Laylet Al-Qadr is not quite known, Muslims honour it on the 27th day of Ramadan.
