Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) has revealed that Egypt’s annual rate of urban inflation rose to 4.8% in May 2021, compared to 4.1% in the previous month.

In its monthly report on inflation, issued on Thursday, CAPMAS indicated that the general consumer price index across the country reached 112.9 points in May 2021. This registered an increase of 0.6% over the month of April 2021.

The agency attributed the most important reasons for this rise to the increase in the prices of fruit by 9.0%, vegetables by 5.3%, and fish and seafood by 0.8%.

The prices of private transportation also increased by 1.9%, whilst garments increased by 1.2%, and calculated rent by 0.4%, despite the decrease in meat and poultry prices by 0.3%.

CAPMAS pointed out that Egypt’s annual inflation rate recorded 4.9% in May 2021, compared to 4.4% in April and 5% in May 2020.
