Security forces dispersed a demonstration Tuesday in Alexandria that ended with the arrest of six supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi, Egyptian state television reported.

Since Morsi’s ouster from power June last year, demonstrations have been organised across Egypt, leading to a crackdown by security forces and large numbers of arrests, with Independent monitoring group Wiki Thawra counting over 42,000 political prisoners over the year.

The arrests have mainly targeted Morsi supporters as well other groups and activists expressing dissent.

Tuesday’s arrests come just a few days after the first anniversary of the violent dispersal at Rabaa Al-Adaweya by security forces, where more than 817 people were killed.

State media said in response to yesterday’s demonstration: “The protesters were chanting slogans hostile to the army, the police, and attempting to provoke a wave of chaos and disrupting traffic.”
