Volkswagen has said thousands more of its luxury cars and SUVs contain “defeat devices” than originally believed. The deceptive software was installed on vehicles going back as far as 2009.
Germany’s largest carmaker told federal regulators in the US on Friday that thousands more of its 3.0-liter V-6 diesel cars and SUVs were equipped with emissions-cheating software, with emission issues now extending to an additional 75,000 vehicles.
The affected models dated back to 2009. Initially, VW had only said vehicles with the larger engines from 2014 to 2016 model years were emitting more nitrogen oxide than allowed.
The carmaker made its admission to the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board on the same day that it was meeting with authorities to inform them of its plans to recall around 482,000 four-cylinder diesel cars that outfitted with so-called “defeat devices.”
