Government to provide compensation for victims of church bombing

The attack on 11 December took place during Sunday mass, killing 26 and injuring 49

Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail decided on Saturday to compensate the families of the victims killed in the St. Paul and St. Peter Church bombing. The families of the deceased will receive EGP 100,000 in compensation, along with a monthly pension of EGP 1,500 per victim, local media reported.

The decision was announced during a cabinet meeting called to discuss various issues the state is currently facing.

Survivors of the attack who have been hospitalised for more than 72 hours will receive EGP 40,000 in compensation. The victims that spent less than 72 hours in hospital will also be compensated; however, the amount was not announced. Furthermore, Ismail said that all victims who are still in hospital will be treated at the state’s expense.

The attack on the church took place during Sunday mass on 11 December, killing 26 people and injuring 49 others.

One day after the attack, the Interior Ministry arrested four people and two other suspects remain at large. The ministry has accused the attackers of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood; however, Islamic State claimed the attack shortly after.

The Coptic church is located inside the complex of St. Mark’s Cathedral, Egypt’s main Orthodox Church in Cairo’s Abbasiya.
