The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced on Saturday former Mubarak-era interior minister Habib El-Adly and ten others in the case of embezzling money from the Interior Ministry, according to state media.

Al-Adly was sentenced to seven years, while the others received various sentences.

El-Adly and twelve of his colleagues, two of which are dead, were referred to the criminal court over illegally seizing funds belonging to the Interior Ministry during their time in office. The defendants are facing accusations of illegally obtaining EGP 3.5m. They all have been banned from travel and have had their assets, and that of their spouses, frozen.

The former minister’s corruption case began in 2012, after he was removed from his position following the 25 January Revolution in 2011.

More than 100 ministry officials were charged with corruption, all accused of accepting bribes. The court dismissed charges against at least 80 defendants in January 2016, due to a lack of criminal evidence, and removed travel bans against them.
