Communications minister studies reducing international roaming fees during 2018 World Cup

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser El Kady met with Ehab Talaat, the candidate for the Egyptian ambassadorship post toRussia, to review the memorandum of understanding signed by Egyptian and Russian mobile network operators in March 2016 to reduce international roaming fees.

They agreed on activating that agreement in preparation for the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in Russia, and will witness the Egyptian national team’s participation in the competition for the first time since 1990. A large number of Egyptian fans are expected to travel to Russia to support the national football team in the tournament.

Both men stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the communications and IT fields. El Kady said that he invited his Russian and Belarusian counterparts to visit Cairo and attend the Cairo International Telecommunication Exhibition, which will be held in December.

The minister also met the candidate for ambassadorship to Serbia, Amr Aljowaily, to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Serbia in the communications and IT fields.

The meeting also tackled the possibility of establishing an Egyptian-Serbian business forum in the communications and IT fields, involving leading companies operating in the communications sector in both countries.

Aljowaily praised the Ministry of Communications’ role in enhancing international cooperation, which reflects positively on political relations between Egypt and Serbia, stressing the importance of the Egyptian telecommunications sector in boosting the national economy.
