116,000 feddans of 1.5m feddans project cultivated in 2016/2017: CAPMAS

The size of the cultivated area in the 1.5m feddans projects amounted to 115,700 feddans in 2016/2017, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).

In its annual bulletin on land reclamation, the CAPMAS said that Minya ranked first in terms of governorates with the largest area of cultivated land in the project, at 70,000 feddans, accounting for 60.5%.

According to the report, Matrouh came second with 35,000 feddans, accounting for 30.3% of the total cultivated lands, then New Valley with 10,000 feddans (8.6%), South Sinai with some 1,000 feddans (0.6%).

Moreover, the CAPMAS stated that the total reclaimed areas amounted to 38,900 feddans in 2016/2017, up from 38,500 feddans in 2015/2016, an increase of 1.1%.

The report showed that the total area of land reclaimed with agriculture cooperative authorities reached 28,700 feddans, accounting for 73.6%, followed by the private sector at 10,300 feddans (26.4%).

It added that the land on which livestock projects are established, including dairy and livestock projects, reached 196,000 feddans in 2016/2017 compared to 136,000 feddans in 2015/2016, growing by 44.1%, noting that this is due to more companies taking part in livestock projects.
