Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation said it decided to cancel discounts offered to some categories on subway tickets to limit long ques in front of ticket windows inside the metro station, in order to reduce major troubles.

The company explained that that season of schools will be back few days, whereby a heavy traffic inside metro will be expected in which the new decision will reduce it.

Two days ago, discount on metro tickets granted to the army, police, and journalists were cancelled, and will be replaced with discounts on subscription on all previous categories.

The new decision will be approved before the end of current week.

The company saw that discounts on subscription is better than that provided on daily tickets.

The metro management will contact press syndicate to coordinate on creating subscriptions for journalist, as there is already discounts on subscriptions for all these categories except them.

The only groups whose privileges have remained the same are persons with special needs and cancer patients, as they will remain getting a ticket only for 50 piasters. As for the elderly they will receive discounts on their subscriptions only.

In July, the Ministry of Transportation increased the price of tickets of metro fares from a flat rate of EGP 2 to EGP 3 for the first nine stations, EGP 5 for up to 16 stations, and EGP 7 for more than 16 stations. The new increases will not affect students, the elderly, and people with special needs. The tickets were, until two years ago, EGP 1 for an unlimited number of stops, before it was doubled to EGP 2 in July last year.
