Administrative Court fires Head of Pharmacists Syndicate Mohy Ebeid

Decision approved recommendations of general assembly organised by syndicate's board held on 14 May

The Administrative Court ordered on Sunday the dismissal of the Head of Pharmacists Syndicate Mohy Ebeid and suspended all decisions taken by him during the recent period.

The decision came following approvals for decisions taken during the general assembly organised by the syndicate’s board held on 14 May as well as another general assembly led by Ebeid that was held on the following day.

Voting to dismiss the head of the syndicate and appoint the deputy of the syndicate Essam Abdel Hamid as acting head, was among the most important recommendations of the board’s general assembly, as well as opening up an investigation with the head of the syndicate over several complaints and not to accept any of decisions will be taken during the general assembly organised by his syndicate and anyone would be punished if they showed support towards these decisions.

The general assembly further rejected the budget of 2015/16 and agreed to refer it to the public prosecution and to hire another auditor.

Earlier in December, the State Commissioners Authority of the State Council recommended in a report the approval of the recommendation of the general assembly that demanded the dismissal of Ebeid upon the request of the board’s members and rejected any recommendation decided upon by Ebeid during his assembly.

Last week, security personnel at the Egyptian Pharmacists Syndicate assaulted four journalists and took their phones, while covering the syndicate’s election. A security guard from the syndicate was subsequently arrested and detained for four days pending investigations.

A member of the Pharmacists Syndicates, Ehab Heikal, announced he is suspending his participation in the meetings of the union in view of the recent assaults against the journalists inside the Pharmacists Syndicate headquarters—one of the syndicates included in the Medical Syndicates Union.

Egyptian Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal expressed on Saturday his complete rejection of the assault against a number of journalists from three different newspapers, and affirmed the necessity to ensure the freedom of the press and media as they performed their work and that the freedom of opinion is a fundamental human right.

Abdel Aal’s remarks came after renowned journalist Mostafa Bakri, a member of the parliament, submitted an urgent interpellation to the minister of health about the incident.

The Press Syndicate denounced the assault against four journalists and the detention of 15 others inside the Pharmacists Syndicate while covering the syndicate’s election. The Press Syndicate suggested that the attack was carried out by the security guard of Mohy Ebeid, head of the Pharmacists Syndicate.
