17.4% increase in total bank deposits balance in 2017/18: CAPMAS

Total deposits balance increased in 2017/18 to reach EGP 3553.6bn, with an increase of 17.4% with the household and private business sectors having the greatest impact on high deposits.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) has issued the annual statistical bulletin for deposits and credit. It included information on the evolution of deposits and credit during 2017/18.

Depositing balances in the household sector reached EGP 2370.8bn in 2017/18, an increase of 22.3%. This increase is due to the shares of individuals in banks, representing 95.1% of the total deposits balance. As for the household sector, it accounted for 66.7% of the total bank deposits.

Depositing balances in the private business sector reached EGP 521.0bn in 2017/18, an increase of 14.4٪, while the organised private business sector accounted for 76.5% of the total deposits balance, and the private business sector accounted for 14.7% of the total bank deposits.

Depositing balances in the public services sector reached EGP 405.1bn in 2017/18, an increase of 5.4%. This increase is due to treasury and government administration deposits in banks, representing 96.8% of the total deposits balance. The public services sector, on the other hand, accounted for 11.4% of total bank deposits.

Credit balances reached EGP 1633.1bn in 2017/2018, an increase of 14.4%.

Total credit balances in the private business sector reached EGP 729.7bn in 2017/18, an increase of 7.9%. This increase is the result of credit granted to the organised private business sector, which reached EGP 586.2bn, representing 80.3% of the total credit granted to the private business sector, while business sectors reached 44.7% of the total credit balances.

Credit balances in the public business sector reached EGP 484.0bn in 2017/18, an increase of 1.9%.This increase is due to the credit granted to economic bodies, which reached EGP 324.4bn, representing 67.0% of the total credit granted to the public business sector, whereas the business sector reached 29.6% of total credit balances.

The surplus of banking liquidity reached 1920.5bn in 2017/18, an increase of 20.0%. This increase is due to the flow of granted deposit credit. The banking liquidity ratio reached 54.0% of total bank deposits.                    .
