Environ Adapt, a leading waste management and resource recovery company, has signed a protocol with Egypt’s Ministry of Environment making Dawar, the company’s mobile application, the official waste monitoring and management system for the Governorates of Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Qena, Assuit, Gharbia and Kafr El Sheikh.

The protocol and award come after the success of Dawar, which has integrated the residents into the waste management cycle through street waste reporting. Environ Adapt launched Dawar’s beta version in October 2018 in Maadi and Tora districts, with the support of Egypt’s Ministry of Environment and Germany’s Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The rollout will start with various districts across Cairo followed by other governorates according to rollout plan to be agreed upon with each governorate.

Dawar, aiming to digitize and optimize the waste management experience, connects residents to the waste management system by enabling app users to send street waste photos to authorized collection companies in each service area, utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to automatically capture the geolocation and timestamp of each photo. Once the user sends a waste photo, a ticket is opened, which is monitored by the Ministry of Environment and the municipality and managed by the authorized collection company in the designated area. The user then receives

an updated photo of the cleaned area on the app. This digitalization enables the effective assessment of the performance of the collection companies and ensures their contractual payment with the relevant authorities.

Environ Adapt’s strategy is to expand Dawar’s scope, not only to serve as a reporting tool for the residents, but also to include a horizontal expansion in terms of its scope of services. The mobile application aims to become a gateway for residents to easily explore sustainability news in Arabic and reach sustainability players who provide products and services in their areas. This is done by connecting the residents to local green companies, NGOs and government authorities through the mobile app.

The Company also received an honorary award in the World Environment Day from Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, for being one of the leading players in the environmental field.
