Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Syria on Tuesday and met with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al-Assad, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).

Putin will visit several facilities in the country.

Putin arrived in Damascus on the second visit to the Syrian capital.

Moscow is the main supporter for the Syrian regime against the opposition, and it has built a military base on the Syrian coast of the Mediterranean Sea to be the first of its kind in the Middle East.

According to SANA, the Russian president met with Al-Assad at the headquarters of the Russian forces in Damascus. During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed military reports concerning the situation on the ground in different battlefields in Syria, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“We have come a long way in rebuilding and unifying Syrian territories,” said Putin, while Al-Assad thanked his Russian supporter for his help in “countering terrorism and restoring peace” in the country.
