Egypt holds first dialogue of 2021 on governance, sustainable development

Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala El-Said, has revealed that the New Valley governorate will receive EGP 5.8bn in public investments as part of the country’s plan for fiscal year (FY) 2020/21.

Egypt’s National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD) held, on Monday, its first dialogue of 2021, focusing on governance and sustainable development.

The session included general introductions to governance, anti-corruption, and sustainable development.

Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development and head of the NIGSD’s Board of Trustees, said the institute aims to facilitate procedures and develop rules governing dealing with state institutions.

The institute, which is the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development’s training arm, also aims to coordinate between relevant stakeholders, whether at the central or local level, following good governance standards.

She added that the NIGSD is also working to monitor and follow up on Egypt’s position relating to indicators of governance, competitiveness, regional and international sustainable development.

As part of this, a national strategy and action plan will be developed to improve this, in coordination with the various units of the state’s administrative apparatus.

NIGSD Executive Director Sharifa Sherif said that the institute is holding awareness meetings on governance and sustainable development.

These are bi-monthly meetings that take place online, and are open to all employees in the state’s administrative apparatus, the public and private sector, and civil society, she added.

Dialogue sessions present several active practitioners in the implementation of policies related to governance and sustainable development.

Sherif added that, with the rapid changes taking place in the world and the global economy, it has become important to rationally manage economic systems. This requires following the foundations of global governance, to achieve the goals of sustainable development.
