Shoukry participates in AU Executive Council meetings in run-up to African Summit

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry has taken part in African Union (AU) Executive Council meetings, in preparation for the African Summit scheduled to be held on 6-7 February.

Ahmed Hafez, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the meeting dealt with the grave challenges faced by the AU in the past year, largely caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

He also highlighted Egypt’s keenness to provide all forms of support to its fellow African countries in confronting that pandemic. In addition to this, Egypt is keen to take part in joint work to ensure that Africa obtains its fair share of the vaccines against the virus.

Hafez added that during the meeting, reference was made to Egypt’s belief in the importance of using joint projects to promote regional development and achieve interdependence among the peoples of the continent.

He noted that the projects that form part of the second phase of the priority action plan that falls under the African Infrastructure Development Program are expected to play a big role in developing the continent’s infrastructure.

Hafez also highlighted the progress made at the meeting in terms of the AU’s financial and administrative reform.

He affirmed Egypt’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the mechanisms of joint African action, according to well-studied principles that ensure the safety and sustainability of the union’s comprehensive reform process. These also aim to achieve the interests and aspirations of all African countries.
