"Design Future Past", the Cairo Designathon Round II (CDRII)

Under the theme “Design Future Past”, the Cairo Designathon Round II (CDRII) is set to take place later on this month.

The application window is open until 8 April, with the Design marathon to take place from 17 April to 22 April.

The CDRII, the only online collaborative design marathon in Egypt and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, aims to generate innovative design solutions and create positive social impact.

CDRII attempts to find out how design, craft, and industry will look like with the increasing proliferation of future digital technologies.

With six design challenges across three modules, CDRII addresses the disruption caused by digital manufacturing and open-source design tools. From Advance Computational design, to 3D Printing to AI driven design, to Big Data to Generative Design tools, future design and manufacturing methods are revolutionising the face of craft and industry.

For five days, 30 teams from Egyptian designers, as well as international participants, will compete across the six design challenges. This will take place in a series of online design workshops across multiple collaborative platforms, with designers from various design disciplines and ages.

The six design challenges are: Furniture design; Light Fixtures design; Woodwork crafts design; Brass crafts design; Social design; and Environmental design.

The event organisers working on coordinating and directing the workshops, are: Award winning Architect Mohamed Radwan, Founder; Amr Orensa, Co-founder; Hisham El Essawy, Co-founder; Prof. Ahmed el Seragy, Director of Enterprise at School of Engineering, University of Lincoln, UK; & Assistant Prof. Nadia A. Volchansky Director of Undergraduate Studies, The George Washington University, USA. Also, Shosha Kamal, Award winning designer and founder of Shosha Kamal Design House and Annure foundation, joined Cairo Designathon as Design Ambassador and outreach partner.

The design marathon will be run completely online, with the event to also feature 16 design talks by renowned Egyptian and International designers. It will also see three International Design films screenings in partnership with the “Film My Design” film festival.

By the end of the marathon, on 22 April, an International Jury committee will evaluate the 30 teams design solutions, and pick six winners, one in each design challenge. The winners will be awarded the first place in that challenge and receive EGP 10,000, as well as showcasing their designs in The Design Show and Cairo Design Awards. They will also receive international publishing and exposure.

Cairo Designathon Round II is sponsored by GLC Paints, and el Beit Magazine, and in partnership with more than 20 design organizations, universities and industry stakeholders locally, regionally and internationally.
