The Arab League will participate in a session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which will be held in New York on Thursday, to show international support for the Palestinians.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League, has assigned the organisation’s Assistant Secretary-General Hosam Zaki to participate in the session.

It will be attended by a number of Arab Ministers of Foreign Affairs, as well as those from countries with influence and ties to the Palestinian cause.

The Arab League confirmed, in a statement on Wednesday, that the UN General Assembly session is of great importance. This is particularly in light of the UN Security Council’s inability to agree on a draft statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, due to the hardening of the US administration’s position on the subject.

The statement clarified the importance of showing international consensus on the justice of the Palestinian cause.

It holds Israel responsible for causing the escalation through its deliberate and provocative measures in Jerusalem throughout the holy month of Ramadan.

The Arab League expressed its condemnation of the continuous and indiscriminate Israeli attacks against civilians in the Gaza Strip.
